Highway 17, also known as the Coastal Highway. Parts of that Savannah-Darien route eventually became U.S. Beginning in Madison Square, the Ogeechee Road ended some 60 miles south at the Altamaha River, in what’s now Darien. A stone monument in downtown Savannah marks what was probably Georgia’s first road, the construction of which got underway in 1735.
